Kanban Systems Improvement (KSI)
Course description
In the Kanban System Design (KSD) course, you learned the foundations of the Kanban Method and how to design a single Kanban system for a team or a project.
The next step on your journey is to learn how to scale out to multiple connected systems. In the Kanban Systems Improvement (KSI) training, you will learn how to maintain momentum beyond initial improvements realized from a successful Kanban implementation, or any other localized Agile initiative:
- Improve workflow performance and optimize your service delivery management
- Extend Kanban across the entire value chain and scale at the organization level with multiple interconnected teams
To succeed, this course will provide you proven tools and techniques to:
- Learn how to proactively manage and streamline your workflow: sources of delays and variability, bottlenecks, dependencies between teams, balancing demand and capacity, shaping demand
- Adopt an approach to evolutionary change and continuous improvement
Learning Objectives
- Understand the basics, motivation, and benefits of evolutionary change.
- Scale out your system in multiple directions – upstream, downstream, connected to other systems.
- Manage dependencies across multiple Kanban systems.
- Learn how to use the Kanban cadences to provide important feedback loops to grow, evolve, and improve your Kanban system for continuous improvement and sustainable customer satisfaction.
- Understand the sources of delays, variability, and what you can do to effectively manage them.
- Identify bottlenecks in a workflow and take actions to improve flow and reduce time to deliver or time to discover.
- Learn the fundamental Kanban metrics such as Lead Time distributions, Run Charts, and Cumulative Flow Diagrams, and how to use them to make informed decisions.
- Learn tools for balancing demand and capacity, including managing variability, improving flow, and shaping demand.

Who is it for?
If you have taken the KSD course and find yourself wondering how to scale, manage or optimize your service delivery, Kanban Systems Improvement is the right course for you. It includes but is not limited to:
- Product Owners, Project Managers, Program Managers, CIO
- Managers, Team leaders
- Agile Coachs, ScrumMasters
- Development leads, Test leads
- Architects, Business Analysts
- Team members
Prerequisites
We strongly recommend you take Kanban System Design (KSD) prior to taking this course. Many people think they have a good understanding of Kanban and can skip directly to KSI, but that rarely works well in our experience. There are many concepts in the KSD course, such as STATIK, work item type, and classes of service, that students need to understand well to take full advantage of Kanban Systems Improvement.
Format
The course is a mix of presentations, simulations, case studies, and exercises.

- Duration: 16 hours
- In person : 2 days
- Virtual: 4 half-days (4 mornings or 4 afternoons)
- Available in public class and in private class
- Available in "in person" and "virtual" class
- Available in English and in French
